The ambitious 600MW Khorlochhu Hydroelectric Project in Trashiyangtse has officially crossed a major milestone, achieving roughly 15 percent physical progress across its primary work fronts. According to Khorlochhu Hydro Power Limited (KHPL), the initiative has successfully transitioned into an integrated construction phase, simultaneously harmonizing complex civil, mechanical, and electrical operations. Excavation works for key components—including the diversion tunnel, powerhouse cavern heading, and outfall areas—are nearing completion, while active stripping and tunneling continue at the main dam site, headrace tunnel, and desilting chambers. Chief Executive Officer Yeshi Tenzin noted that upcoming operations will focus on diverting the river through the nearly finalized diversion tunnel to jump-start the construction of the main cofferdam and dam structure. Despite facing distinct operational hurdles such as challenging geological formations, equipment shortages, and supply chain disruptions for explosives, the venture continues to maintain steady momentum. Beyond its engineering feats, the project is actively catalyzing regional economic growth and community development. It has generated substantial direct and indirect employment for hundreds of local residents, upgraded vital road infrastructure, and partnered with local administrations to address community needs like drinking water shortages and healthcare facilities. With major contracts fully awarded and financing secured, the project remains steadfast on its path toward reshaping the region’s energy and infrastructure landscape.
