Bhutan inaugurated a new pedestrian immigration terminal in Gelephu on October 22, 2026, introducing biometric e-gates to simplify cross-border travel for eligible Bhutanese and Indian nationals travelling between southern Bhutan and Assam.
The facility uses facial recognition technology to verify travellers against registered biometric information, allowing eligible individuals to complete immigration clearance through automated gates. Travellers without registered biometrics can continue using staffed immigration counters, with standard border regulations remaining in force.
Gelephu Mindfulness City Governor Dr Lotay Tshering inaugurated the terminal, which is expected to reduce waiting times, improve immigration records and strengthen border monitoring amid growing cross-border movement. The new facility expands Bhutan’s use of automated immigration systems, which are already operational at Phuentsholing’s pedestrian terminal and Paro International Airport.
Authorities are also considering a nominal service fee, although its amount and implementation date have not been announced. Permanent arrangements for third-country nationals are planned for a later stage, while a temporary crossing arrangement will operate from October 24 to November 6 for invited international guests attending the consecration of the 108 Jangchub Chortens in Gelephu Mindfulness City.
The terminal is part of wider infrastructure development linked to Gelephu Mindfulness City, including plans for an international airport, improved roads and proposed railway connections between Bhutan and India.
