Her Royal Highness Princess Sonam Dechan Wangchuck graced the official launch of the Australian National University’s (ANU) Hub for Bhutan Studies in Thimphu, marking a significant milestone in strengthening diplomatic, academic, and policy cooperation between Bhutan and Australia. Based at the prestigious Crawford School of Public Policy in Canberra, the newly established Hub is designed to promote rigorous academic research on Bhutan, advance evidence-based public policymaking, and enhance the professional capabilities of Bhutanese civil servants and independent researchers. Focusing primarily on Gross National Happiness (GNH), environmental sustainability, public administration, and good governance, the initiative connects international scholars directly with Bhutan’s national development priorities while fostering sustainable inter-institutional collaboration. The Royal Civil Service Commission (RCSC) has already initiated partnership efforts with the Hub to roll out specialized capacity-building programs, where Crawford School experts will train Bhutanese specialists in data-driven policy design and empirical research methodologies. In tandem with this initiative, the RCSC is executing a comprehensive civil service census to capture workforce experiences, address workplace concerns, and cultivate more inclusive administrative environments across government agencies. Beyond core research and executive education exchanges, the Hub aims to project Bhutan’s unique governance insights globally, including hosting a landmark Buddhist Governance Conference in Bhutan in August next year. According to Dr. Lhawang Ugyel, Founding Director of the Hub, this conference will showcase how traditional institutions originally established by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in the 17th century continue to inform modern governance, illustrating the ongoing relevance of Buddhist values in public administration. Ultimately, through joint research, executive education, and government-to-government partnerships, the Hub serves as a dynamic bridge to share Bhutan’s pioneering models of sustainable development and holistic governance with the global community.
