A profound spiritual milestone has been marked in Bhutan with the formal consecration of a magnificent new thongdrol at the historic Tara Lhaden Zhingkham complex in Pangrizampa. The grand ceremony, known as Tashi Rabney, was graced by His Majesty King Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the Fourth King, whose presence underscored the immense national and spiritual gravity of the occasion.
Her Royal Highness Princess Eeuphelma Choden Wangchuck, alongside members of the Royal Family, senior government officials, and high-ranking representatives of the Central Monastic Body (Zhung Dratshang), also attended the sacred gathering. The newly consecrated Drölma Nyishu Tsachi Thongdröl is a giant, sacred silk appliqué tapestry measuring 36 feet wide and 26 feet high. It depicts the 21 Emanations of Tara, with Green Tara and White Tara serving as the central focus.
Crafted over the course of a year from fine Thai silk, the creation of this masterpiece was initiated under the patronage and guidance of Her Majesty Queen Mother Gyalyum Sangay Choden Wangchuck. The grand tapestry was formally consecrated by the Venerable Dorji Lopen, with prayers dedicated to the peace, prosperity, and long life of His Majesty the King and all sentient beings.
In the Bhutanese Vajrayana Buddhist tradition, thongdrol translates to “liberation through sight.” Devotees believe that merely gazing upon these sacred scrolls purifies negative karma and generates immense spiritual merit. To preserve this living tradition, the monumental tapestry will be unfurled annually on the fifteenth day of the fourth month of the Bhutanese lunar calendar, allowing locals and visitors alike to receive its historic blessings.
