Bhutan’s largest dry port in Pasakha has been successfully completed and is currently awaiting the finalization of its operational management before opening its gates to streamline cross-border trade and logistics. Built at a cost of Nu 1.2 billion and sprawling across more than 15 acres of land, this mega facility is designed to fundamentally transform how goods entering the country are cleared and handled, while significantly alleviating chronic traffic congestion and heavy vehicle pressure on Phuentshogling, Bhutan’s primary land entry point. Initiated in October 2019 and executed by project developer Hi-Tech Company Private Limited across six major packages, the massive undertaking overcame severe disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and global market volatility stemming from international conflicts. The state-of-the-art infrastructure houses three expansive container freight stations, each exceeding 4,800 square meters in area and collectively capable of processing up to 100 truckloads of cargo daily. In addition to these large warehouses, the port features a vast container yard, a dedicated cold storage facility, driver dormitories, and a canteen to support seamless transit operations. Crucially, the facility centralizes all vital trade and regulatory agencies under one roof, providing dedicated offices for the Department of Revenue and Customs, the Bhutan Food and Drug Authority, law enforcement, and licensed clearing agents to make cargo clearance markedly more organized and efficient. While construction and physical readiness are fully accomplished, the port’s launch awaits the conclusion of ongoing stakeholder meetings aimed at finalizing its management structure. For local traders, commercial transporters, and supply chain operators, anticipation is high regarding when the facility will officially commence operations and how effectively it will relieve logistical bottlenecks at the nation’s busiest trade corridor.
