
Bhutan’s Thanza Extended Classroom relocated to Tenchoe due to high-risk zone near Thorthomi Lake, causing children to attend school in tents amid cold weather. Lunana’s highland communities face challenges due to the 1994 GLOF, causing seasonal migrations. To adapt, three tents and a makeshift toilet with SATO technology were erected, allowing classes to be conducted outdoors. According to Ugyen Rinzin, the principal of the Thanza Extended Classroom, it is intolerable to have courses within the tents due to the extreme cold, which is exacerbated by high gusts that start at around 11 am.
School, part of the national feeding programme, has been relocated to Tenchoe due to safety concerns. The administration has awarded construction of an ECCD Centre, with two classrooms allocated for the school. Bhutanese administration plans to construct a new school building in 2025-26, valued at Nu 2.2 million, to address the dangers of Bhutan’s most dangerous glacial lake, Thorthormi, due to its higher elevation and deteriorating moraine dam.
