Bhutan has entered the Guinness World Records for the most stupas or chortens consecrated simultaneously across multiple venues, following the completion of 108 Jangchub Chortens in Gelephu Mindfulness City on November 1, 2026.
The 108 chortens were constructed along an 11.7-kilometre stretch of the Mau Chhu river, with each structure standing 15 metres tall. The construction was completed within nine hours, with thousands of volunteers and trained workers taking part. The chortens were subsequently consecrated simultaneously at all 108 sites. A Guinness World Records adjudicator presented the official certificate to Gelephu Mindfulness City Governor Dasho Dr Lotay Tshering during the ceremony.
The event coincided with Lhabab Duechen, an important Buddhist occasion, and the 18th anniversary of King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck’s coronation. Indian Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju also joined Bhutanese dignitaries in offering prayers. One of the chortens was dedicated to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in recognition of the longstanding friendship between the two countries. The initiative, known as Project 108, was announced by the King in February 2026 as an offering for peace and well-being. The number 108 holds deep significance in Buddhist tradition.
International guests, Buddhist monks and volunteers from across Bhutan participated in the event, including actor and martial artist Jet Li. Since the consecration, pilgrims and visitors have been walking along the entire corridor and circumambulating the 108 chortens as an act of prayer and devotion. While some complete the journey in five to six hours, others take around 10 hours. The 108 chortens are expected to serve as permanent spiritual landmarks and places of reflection within Gelephu Mindfulness City.
