US President Donald Trump has announced that, effective January 1, 2027, tariffs on Canadian vehicles, automotive parts, and steel will rise to 50 percent. This move will significantly escalate trade tensions with one of America’s closest economic partners. Trump made the announcement in a post on ‘Truth Social.’ He accused Canada of imposing heavy tariffs on US agricultural products and treating the US unfairly for years. “Canada has been taking advantage of the US for years,” Trump said. He added, “Their excessive tariffs on our farmers and agricultural products have made life difficult for these great American patriots and have long created a $60 billion deficit between our two countries.” Trump stated that the current trade relationship is “unsustainable” and declared that Washington would no longer accept it. “On January 1, 2027, tariffs on all cars, trucks (both large and small), automotive parts, and steel will be raised to 50 percent,” Trump said. He offered companies an exemption if they shifted their manufacturing to the US. “Make it in America, and no tariff will apply,” he said. The President also signaled a further deterioration in relations with Ottawa, stating that Canada would no longer receive the special treatment from Washington it once enjoyed. “Canada will no longer be treated like a state!” Trump said. He added, “In trade and other matters, they are among the most difficult countries in the world to deal with. They feel entitled, yet we don’t need Canada; they need us.” Trump also claimed that Canada conducts 95 percent of its trade with the US, whereas the US economy relies very little on Canadian trade. “They do 95 percent of their trade with the US, while the situation is the exact opposite for us!” he said.
