Tata Power and Bhutan’s Druk Green Power Corporation Ltd (DGPC) have expanded their clean energy partnership with the addition of the 404 MW Nyera Amari I & II Integrated Hydropower Project in Bhutan, increasing the total planned generation capacity under their collaboration from 4,500 MW to 5,033 MW. The expansion follows an amendment to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two companies in November 2024 for the joint development of hydropower and solar projects in Bhutan.
The partnership now includes major projects such as Khorlochhu (600 MW), Dorjilung (1,125 MW), Gongri Reservoir with Jeri Pumped Storage (2,540 MW), Chamkharchhu IV (364 MW), and Nyera Amari I & II (404 MW). Tata Power CEO and MD Praveer Sinha said the collaboration would strengthen Bhutan’s economic growth and regional energy security while ensuring access to reliable clean power for India during periods of high electricity demand. DGPC Managing Director Dasho Chhewang Rinzin said the projects reflect Bhutan’s ambition to become a leading clean energy nation and align with the country’s target of achieving 25,000 MW power generation capacity by 2040. The partnership is considered one of the largest clean energy collaborations between Indian and Bhutanese power companies in Asia.
