
The project aims to provide a reliable drinking water supply and improve hygiene in the community, addressing the increasing population and drying up existing sources. It will ensure a steady supply and maintain hygiene in homes, schools, and hospitals. The BMVA, established in Thimphu to regulate meat prices, has become de facto market rules, imposing maximum price limits and penalties on violators, ensuring affordability and accessibility. The report highlights that 12% of BMVA members find pricing policies rigid and 38 percent of vendors suggest government intervention for affordability, despite limited historical data and logistical constraints. The licensed slaughterhouse in Tsirang faces supply and price strain due to increasing demand, while Bhutan’s Ministry of Agriculture aims to increase chicken production.
In Tsirang, Samdrupjongkhar Samtse, three sizable broiler farms will be built. Each farm will house 10,000 birds and produce 260 MT of chicken yearly. With the help of the Price Guarantee Scheme under ESP, processing facilities in Samtse and Dagana will guarantee effective processing and distribution. By raising domestic pork output from 30 – 60%, the government hopes to raise yearly production from 1,590 MT to 1,845 MT. For private contract breeders, the government intends to produce 1,228 breeding pigs per year. Dagana, Sarpang, Samtse, and Samdrupjongkhar will all see the establishment of sizable fattening farms. In order to produce and supply 151.5 MT of pork, 112 MT of chicken, and 29.8 MT of fish, SOEs under the ESP will set up piggery cold chains and revitalize fish ponds.
