Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to lay the foundation stone for a crucial railway project on March 13, which will connect Assam’s Kokrajhar with Bhutan. This initiative is recognized as a significant strategic and developmental advancement for India’s Northeast region. The event will take place at Greenfield ground in Kokrajhar, where preparations for the Prime Minister’s visit are underway. The proposed rail link aims to enhance cross-border connectivity, promote economic relations with Bhutan, and open new growth opportunities for Assam and the surrounding Northeast.
In addition to the railway project, the Prime Minister plans to inaugurate several important development initiatives during his visit, reflecting the government’s commitment to accelerating infrastructure growth in the area. Key state and regional leaders, including Assam Cabinet Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah and Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota, have been actively involved in ensuring that the event runs smoothly. They recently inspected various logistical elements such as security arrangements, stage construction, and expected public participation at the Greenfield venue.
A high-level coordination meeting was held at the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Secretariat, bringing together officials from various departments to discuss security measures, traffic management, crowd control, and overall administrative coordination. Anticipating a significant public turnout, authorities are focusing on facilitating smooth movement in and around Kokrajhar town.
The railway project is anticipated to bolster trade, tourism, and interpersonal exchanges between India and Bhutan. Strategically, it supports India’s goal of enhancing connectivity in border areas and fostering closer integration of the Northeast with neighboring countries, in line with its broader regional outreach policy.
For the Bodoland Territorial Region, this initiative symbolizes more than just the construction of a railway line; it reflects a renewed focus from the central government on infrastructure-driven development, job creation, and economic integration. If realized as scheduled, the Kokrajhar-Bhutan rail corridor could transform the region into a vital gateway for cross-border commerce.
