Businesses are expressing confusion over the Goods and Services Tax (GST) system, citing a lack of proper guidance and advocacy. With around 4,500 businesses required to register under GST, the GST Help Desk reportedly receives at least 100 queries and complaints daily. Business owners say that while registration is mandatory, finding technical support has been a significant challenge. The Department of Revenue Compliance (DRC) only emphasizes the need to register, without providing practical assistance, leaving many unable to add GST to their services or products.
One owner explained that, despite understanding the requirement, they had not applied GST for any clients due to the absence of technical help. This confusion has affected the entire supply chain; for instance, alcohol wholesalers remained closed for several days because they too struggled with GST compliance. Even larger businesses with established supplier contracts were reportedly unsure about operating under the new system.
A team member noted that the problem lies in the complexity of the GST Act, not in the education level of business owners. Many feel that earlier and broader outreach, along with better advocacy, could have significantly reduced uncertainty, as nationwide meetings only began months after GST was announced.
