Mahalal Rai’s journey from a small village in Tsirang to becoming Mr. Bhutan 2025 is a story of determination, discipline, and resilience. Raised in a middle-class family with seven siblings, Mahalal grew up learning the value of hard work from an early age.
Life in his village was physically demanding. As a child, he often worked in the fields and carried baskets of oranges for distances of up to 15–20 kilometers. Those early experiences shaped his strong work ethic and mental toughness, which later became the foundation of his fitness journey.
“Hard work was always part of my childhood,” Mahalal says, reflecting on how rural life helped build his strength and perseverance.
His passion for fitness gradually turned into a serious pursuit. In 2019, after watching other athletes succeed in bodybuilding competitions, Mahalal decided to step out of his comfort zone and fully dedicate himself to the sport. That decision marked the beginning of a challenging yet rewarding journey.
Inspired by leading Bhutanese bodybuilders such as Tshering Dorji and Sonam Dorji, he committed himself to strict training routines, disciplined diets, and continuous improvement. Support from friends, teammates, and mentors also played an important role in helping him stay motivated.
Initially, Mahalal’s family had concerns about his career choice, fearing potential health risks and injuries. However, his consistent dedication and disciplined lifestyle gradually earned their trust and support.
His competitive journey began in 2019, where he placed sixth in his first event. Over the years, his performance steadily improved. In 2022, he secured second place in the Mr. Bhutan Men’s Physique category, followed by first place in 2023. In 2024, he finished second in Mr. Bhutan, represented the country at the World Championship in the Maldives, and won gold at the 15th South Asian Championship.
After competing in eight events, Mahalal finally achieved his dream by winning the prestigious Mr. Bhutan 2025 title.
For him, the title represents more than just physical strength. He believes it reflects values such as discipline, humility, perseverance, and national pride.
Preparing for competitions requires intense focus on both training and nutrition. During muscle-building phases, he follows a high-calorie diet, while the cutting phase demands strict discipline with limited carbohydrates and high protein intake.
Looking ahead, Mahalal aims to compete in more national and international bodybuilding events and continue promoting fitness as a lifestyle.
His remarkable journey—from a village boy carrying oranges across long distances to a national bodybuilding champion—now serves as a powerful inspiration for young people across Bhutan to pursue their dreams with dedication and belief.
