Farmers of Tsirang, particularly in Sunkosh Chiwog under Rangthangling Gewog, are actively preparing for the winter chilli season, aiming for a successful harvest that will boost their household incomes. Sunkosh is recognized as a pioneering area in winter chilli cultivation within Tsirang Dzongkhag, with farmers starting their planting activities early, some even having initiated growth this season.
Dorji Dema, the Administrative Officer of Rangthangling Gewog, emphasized the region’s tradition of winter chilli plantation, noting the Gewog’s support in providing mulching plastic for the 2023–2024 financial year, which has been instrumental for the farmers who are acknowledged for their hard work and commitment to agriculture.
Among the notable farmers, Bal Bahadur Pradhan has been a prominent figure in this cultivation journey since he was inspired to engage in winter chilli farming during an agricultural meeting in 2022. Over the last three years, he has honed his skills in winter chilli farming, experiencing notable success. He commented that his harvest last year was satisfactory, and he anticipates an even more fruitful yield this season. Bal Bahadur’s approach includes timely planting in June at the onset of early winter, which he believes is essential for good productivity. He also articulated the economic advantages of chilli farming, which contributes significantly to his family’s income as he sells his produce in multiple markets including Damphu, Wangdi, and Thimphu. However, he also highlighted water management as a critical challenge in the cultivation process.
The collective enthusiasm among the farmers in Sunkosh Chiwog indicates confidence in bringing Bhutanese chillies to market this season. The support from the Gewog has enhanced their productivity, and the farmers’ effective use of available resources and innovative practices illustrates their resilience and dedication. The cultivation of winter chillies not only provides economic benefits for households but also bolsters the local agricultural economy.
Through knowledge-sharing and the adoption of successful cultivation techniques, farmers in Sunkosh are setting an exemplary standard for other communities, promoting improved farming practices. With strategic planning, timely sowing, and continuous support from local authorities, the farmers are optimistic about a productive chilli season ahead. Winter chilli cultivation in this region exemplifies how small-scale farmers can creatively adapt and prosper, ensuring local livelihoods and the supply of high-quality Bhutanese chillies in the market.
