The government of Bhutan has launched a new National Organic Farming Mission with the goal of converting all agricultural practices to organic by 2030. This initiative, announced in Thimphu, includes subsidies for compost production, training for farmers, and eco-certification support.
Bhutan already limits chemical fertilizers and pesticides, but this new mission solidifies its global leadership in sustainable farming. Agriculture Minister Yeshey Penjor said, “This is not just about food—it’s about our environment, culture, and spiritual heritage.”
The initiative has gained interest in India’s northeast, especially in Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh, where organic farming is also being promoted. Bangladeshi and Nepali agro-entrepreneurs are looking to collaborate through regional training and seed exchanges.
