The deal between Druk Green Power Corporation and the Adani Group for the Wangchhu Hydropower Project is still pending, even though an MOU was signed in June 2024. Neither party is currently legally bound by the MoU. For the Wangchhu project, there are two possible solutions under consideration: a 900 MW reservoir-based plan or a 570 MW run-of-the-river design. Even so, first conversations have occurred. Gautam Adani is expected to face a protracted trial in the United States on allegations of participation in a multi-million dollar fraud and bribery conspiracy, according to international media.
Adani and his co-defendants have been charged by the SEC and the U.S. Department of Justice for bribing Indian authorities with more than USD 250 million in order to get solar contracts worth an estimated USD 2 billion over a 20-year period. A DGPC official said that it is too soon to comment on a case brought in another country when questioned about the possible effects of these events on Bhutan’s relationship with the Adani Group and future investments.
