EtonHouse Bhutan International School, described as Bhutan’s first international school, formally opened in Thimphu on August 31, 2026, with an inaugural batch of nine students.
The school currently offers classes from Kindergarten to Year Six, with seven teachers, including three expatriates and four Bhutanese. It plans to gradually expand admissions and eventually offer education from Kindergarten to Year 12.
The first secondary students are expected to join in January 2027 as Year Seven students, followed by further expansion into Years Eight and Nine from August 2027. Established through a partnership between the Royal Government of Bhutan and EtonHouse International Education Group, the school aims to combine international education standards with Bhutanese culture, values and the principles of Gross National Happiness.
The campus is being developed in phases, including renovated facilities, a playground, STEAM and ICT spaces, science laboratories, cultural learning areas, sports and performing arts facilities. School officials said the initiative will provide Bhutanese families with access to internationally benchmarked education within the country, potentially reducing the need to send children abroad for schooling. The school is also offering concessional fees for Bhutanese students.
EtonHouse International Education Group, which has operated for more than three decades, has a network of around 100 campuses across eight countries.
