More than a decade after their installation, several outdoor gyms in Thimphu are showing signs of wear, prompting residents to raise concerns over safety and maintenance. Some equipment is damaged or unusable, while children and adults have been seen using metal frames as swings. Residents say unstable and broken machines could pose risks, particularly to children, and are calling for regular inspections, timely repairs and clearer safety instructions. The Ministry of Health installed around 13 outdoor gyms in Thimphu in 2015, with Thimphu Thromde now responsible for their maintenance. The Thromde says it responds to reports of damaged equipment, generally on the same day, and carries out repairs when necessary. However, it says it has received no complaints of injuries or accidents linked to the facilities since the last maintenance work in 2024. Residents can report damaged equipment directly to the Thromde or through its social media platforms. While there are currently no plans for new outdoor gyms, users say maintaining existing facilities is essential to keeping these public exercise spaces safe and useful.
