The United States may be preparing to scale back its military operations against Iran, with President Donald Trump indicating a possible de-escalation following a series of retaliatory strikes targeting critical energy infrastructure.
Trump stated that Washington is “very close to meeting” its objectives and is now considering “winding down” its military efforts in the Middle East. His remarks mark the strongest signal yet of a potential shift in strategy since hostilities escalated on February 28.
The development comes after a sharp escalation earlier this week, when Israel struck a key Iranian gas field. In retaliation, Iran targeted the world’s largest LNG facility in Qatar, located across the same field, significantly raising concerns over global energy security.
The exchange of strikes sent shockwaves through international markets, pushing both oil and gas prices sharply higher. The strategic importance of the region—particularly energy corridors linked to the Persian Gulf—has amplified fears of prolonged economic disruption.
Amid the fallout, Trump also indicated that Israel would refrain from further strikes on the Iranian gas field, signalling an effort to prevent additional escalation in energy-related targets.
In a statement shared on Truth Social, Trump referred to Iran as a “terror regime” while emphasizing that US military objectives were nearing completion. However, he coupled the de-escalation signal with a warning, suggesting that any further aggression could trigger renewed action.
The conflict, which has seen coordinated US and Israeli strikes followed by Iranian retaliation, has already heightened instability across the region. Attacks on critical infrastructure have not only intensified military tensions but also underscored the vulnerability of global energy supplies.
While Trump’s remarks offer a possibility of reduced hostilities, the situation remains fragile, with both sides still on high alert. Observers note that any further provocation—particularly involving energy assets—could quickly reverse the current trajectory toward de-escalation.
