On February 24, 2026, Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s government reinstated a press wing for President Mohammad Shahabuddin at his office. The Public Administration Ministry announced the reappointment of Mohammad Sarwar Alam as press secretary at the Bangabhaban presidential palace, effective for one year. Alam had been press secretary prior to the regime change in 2024, when his previous appointment was dissolved by the interim government led by Mr. Yunus. Alongside Alam’s return, the positions of deputy press secretary and assistant press secretary were also eliminated, and two long-serving photographers were removed from their posts.
In the ensuing months, any official ceremonial photographs, such as those of the President meeting with foreign envoys or military chiefs, were captured and distributed by foreign embassies or the respective armed forces instead of the presidential office. President Shahabuddin, who took office as the 22nd President of Bangladesh on April 24, 2023, during the tenure of the Awami League, revealed on February 22, 2026, that he had faced multiple attempts by Mr. Yunus to oust him. In a discussion with the prominent Bangla daily Kalerkantha, he stated that during the 18 months under the interim government, he had been excluded from discussions and that various plots against him had been formulated.
