
In order to supply six schools in Samdrup Choling Drungkhag, Sangshingzor Vegetable Group in Phuntshothang Gewog has increased the amount of fresh vegetables it produces. The group intends to cultivate more land and has a greenhouse. The group is commended for its tenacity in the face of market difficulties, with vendor Sherab Dorji playing a significant part. The villagers’ commitment drives their efforts to support their village, despite receiving NGOs’ support. They are struggling with fencing issues and feel helpless in preventing damage and supporting agricultural activities. Jamtsho highlighted Sangshingzor Vegetable Group’s dedication to supporting financially struggling individuals, despite challenges faced during COVID-19, and their tireless efforts to provide organic produce to schools and create sustainable livelihoods.
The Sangshingzor Vegetable Group is assessing land’s long-term viability and reducing reliance on imported vegetables, contributing to Bhutan’s food security and providing organic nutrients to children. The initiative aims to decrease vegetable imports, strengthen local economy, and provide fresh, organic produce. It plans to expand cultivation and promote self-sufficiency among residents. Significant strides have been made by the Sangshingzor Vegetable Group to improve local agriculture, guarantee food security, and lessen reliance on imported produce. The group, which currently has more than 3 acres under cultivation, is dedicated to growing its business through projects like better water supply and chain-link fencing. Despite obstacles, their efforts have already paid off, helping communities and schools in the eastern area.
