The Bhutan National Legal Institute President, Her Royal Highness Princess Sonam Dechan Wangchuck, introduced the Justice Sector Strategic Plan II in Thimphu. The goal of JSSP II is to further reform Bhutan’s justice system while advancing the stated socioeconomic development objectives. In addition to focusing on important priority areas, this all-encompassing approach preserves the fundamental values of justice and the rule of law. It aims to make institutional procedures and systems stronger. By improving the effectiveness of the legal system and guaranteeing prompt, transparent dispute resolution—both crucial for business—the new strategic plan seeks to support JSSP I’s mission and success by creating an atmosphere that is favorable to investment and economic growth.
The initiative aims to eliminate socioeconomic inequities and foster social cohesion by granting equal access to legal services and legal protection. By providing a fair and effective legal environment, legal certainty, and cost-effective conflict resolution, it puts the justice sector as the cornerstone of the nation’s success and contributes to socio-economic development. JSSP II was developed with technical assistance from UNICEF and UNDP. According to UNICEF Representative Andrea James, improving justice for children requires a thorough strategic strategy for the judicial sector. The Office of the Attorney General’s Justice Sector Secretariat will oversee the plan’s execution, with assistance from the Joint Justice Sector Management Committee and the Justice Sector Working Committee National Steering Committee.
